Ciechocinek has been known for 170 years as a world-wide famous spa. Chloride-sodium -iodide-bromide brine springs, and then bucks and salts generated therefrom are applied in the treatments. The biggest attraction of Ciechocinek are the graduation towers erected in the 19th century. These three constructions of imposing size (1,741 m long, 16 m high) were built of wooden blocks filled up with dry blackthorn bushes. The brine is pumped from the springs to the top and then down again and gets concentrated.
During this process a large amount of ozone and iodide is generated, which fill the air with microelements of proven healing properties. Concentrated brine from the reservoirs at the foot of the graduation towers is sent to the salt-works.
The graduation towers, thermal-brine swimming pool, numerous parks and green areas and the attractive location of the spa in the Vistula river valley contributed greatly to creating a very favourable microclimate.
The very name of the sanatorium "Pod Tężniami" (At the Graduation Towers") comes
